Mars Dome

In 2011, the team formed the Mars Primus Corporation for the purposes of creating a Mars habitation dome. We ended up with a 9m inflatable geodesic dome, reaching about 3m at its peak.

On this page you can see photos of the construction and inflated dome, and also images from the Mars Primus Corporation website.

The dome was constructed over a month, it is made entirely from polythene, welded together with a home clothing iron (with the aid of some baking paper).
To inflate the dome, we use either a modified leaf blower or a squirrel cage fan.

Attaching the floor of the dome. A 10x10m polythene base.

First inflation after the floor was welded on.

The dome was also used as the Canterbury Aerospace Club sign-ups tent in 2012.

The smaller tent on the side is the housing for the leaf blower/fan.

For the clubs-day sign ups, we had several air sharks, an octo-copter, and several rockets on display.
